And Why It’s Worth Your Time to Clarify Yours

Jesus was crystal clear on His purpose and mission.

Many times He used phrases like, “For this reason I have come.”

“God has sent me to…..”

The night before the Cross, Jesus prayed, “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work You have given Me to do.” (John 17:4)

How did Jesus know He had accomplished the work the Father gave Him to do?

He knew His purpose and His mission.

Jesus is our example and He lived a Purpose-driven life.

Business leadership Guru Jim Collins of Good to Great fame, makes helping organizations clarify their Core: Purpose and Values a key part of his consulting.

Why? Because without a clear, well-defined purpose and values “core”, there is no clear standard for decision-making and unified work and projects.

Collins says that all kinds of changes will need to be made as businesses do business, but the core should rarely be adjusted.

The core is what makes it all work Together.

Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk and book, The Power of Why have been seen

and/or read by millions.

He said that average companies tell us what they do, how they do it, and finally why they do it.

But great leaders and great organizations lead with Why, then what and how.

Purpose needs to be not only the core, but also the lead in what we do and how we communicate.

So many successful business or organizational leaders, have a business mission statement or purpose statement, but don’t have that same clarity for their lives.

They would never take on a project without a clear objective, but when it comes to their personal lives, they often just follow what comes next.

Jesus knew why He came to earth and what the purpose of God was for His life. The Apostle Paul knew, so did Peter. So did William Wilberforce, John Wesley, Jackie Robinson, Chuck Colson, and every other godly difference maker.

“Success demands singleness of purpose.”

Vince Lombardi

“Nothing will divert me from my purpose.”

Abraham Lincoln

“Where there is no vision, the people perish (wander.)”

Proverbs 29:18

God wants you to know your purpose.

He wants you to know why you are here and what He wants you to do with your life.

Jesus taught it and lived it. Jim Collins and Simon Sinek emphasize it in their work.

Take the time, do the work, to get clear on why you are here. It’s worth it.
