Turning Devotions from Discipline to Destiny
2 Simple Practices make a big, big difference
Some days, my devotions are filled with incredible insights from the Bible and strong, positive emotions in prayer. It’s easy to spend time alone with God when I experience those things.
Other days, it’s ok. I see something in the Bible that’s interesting or educational or comforting, but it’s not “wow, that’s amazing!” I sense a measure of God’s nearness, peace, faith, or joy in prayer.
And occasionally, I see nothing new or faith-building in the Bible and God seems a million miles away.
Feelings are Not Facts
I’ve been doing this long enough, and have enough Bible knowledge to realize that my feelings are not facts. Feelings are, to a great degree, simply my response to how I perceive things.
I also know that God intentionally does not give us great emotional highs each day because He wants us to learn to live by faith, not by great feelings. He wants to develop stable faith in us and that means believing God works even when we don’t feel it.
Nevertheless, there are a few things we can do to up the percentages of having positive feelings during devotional times. Our devotions can move from needed discipline to live changing destiny.
