The Easiest Way to Fill Up On God
This Simple Biblical Practice Can Be Done By Anyone Throughout the Day
There is a super simple, incredibly powerful biblical practice to help you keep being filled with the life of God throughout the day.
What Could Be Better Than Being Filled with the Life of God?
The Bible tells us that God is:
Love
Light
Joyful
Peace-filled
Just
Kind
Powerful
Wise
And everything else that is good.
And the Bible tells us that it is God’s will that we connect with Him and learn how to be filled with His life and presence as a lifestyle.
“that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God.” Ephesians 3:19b
How great is that! It is God’s plan that we get filled up with the greatest quality of life possible.
How?
There are several practices given in Scripture as to how to keep being filled up with God’s life and presence, but here is the simplest one and one you can do in seconds, or minutes, or even hours.
“be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:19b-20
Put in one phrase, to keep being filled with God’s Spirit and life…
Speak and sing words of thanks and worship from the heart.
Psalm 71:8 reinforces this, “My mouth is filled with your praise and with your glory all day long”
Praising God, speaking words and singing songs of thankfulness, worship, and praise from the heart opens the hose to the flow of the Holy Spirit into our souls and sometimes our bodies.
There is a strong “glory of God”, “God’s Spirit” and heart-driven praise.
Psalm 100 says that we enter God’s gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.
So, whether you have great emotions or not, each time you direct your heart towards God and with thankfulness speak or sing words to Him, you open your soul to be filled more with the Spirit of life, the Holy Spirit.
You Can Do This In Seconds or Hours
The wonderful thing about being a Jesus-follower is that the connection to God is available 24/7. All it takes is to direct your attention to Him and welcome Him and begin to thank Him.
Right now, I am taking a minute to simply say, “Thank you, Father, that you are with me right now.” That simple little prayer of thanksgiving, just doing that for the 2 seconds it took me, opened me up to the flow of the Holy Spirit.
If I hold that posture for a minute or start thanking Him for His promises or His love or His joy or His kindness or if I sing a little song of thankfulness to Him from my heart, according to Scripture, I am being filled more with God’s life.
This Works
The Apostle Paul knew more about the God-filled, Spirit-filled life than maybe anyone in history (after Jesus). Ephesians 5:19–20 were his instructions on how to keep being filled with the Spirit, the Life of God.
He practiced it, even in the harshest of conditions with incredible results.
In Acts 16 Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown in prison for their ministry in Philippi. Verse 26 tell us “But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise….”
They were in physical pain, had been unjustly treated and thrown into a filthy Roman jail, but they understood to be filled with more of God, speak/sing words of praise and thanks to God.
Often Praise Comes First, Feelings Second
In the midnight hour with plenty of opportunity for self-pity or accusation towards God, they turned the tables on Satan’s attack by praising God.
Soon a powerful earthquake hits the prison, Paul and Silas are freed and they end up leading the jailor and his entire family to Christ.
Incredible miracles do not happen every time we give thanks to God, but sometimes they do and that is awesome! However, according to God’s word, each time we give thanks and praise to God from the heart, we are filled more with His Spirit and life.
The hardest part about this process is during the times when we just don’t feel like doing it. If life is hard right now. If you’re going through physical pain or an injustice. It is easy to yield to negative feelings or get mad at God and step away from worship.
But please take this to heart: every time you open your heart to God and worship Him or thank Him, even when you don’t understand what is going on or you’re going through great pain; God meets you in the way you need and fills you with more of His love, or comfort, or healing, or wisdom.
The more you practice this throughout the day, the more you’ll live a life being filled with God’s presence and life.
