Why as an Experienced Jesus Follower, I’m Focusing Much More on the Greatness of Jesus

A couple of weeks ago, after a time of Bible study and prayer, I was walking out the door of my home to do some writing at the library and this clear thought jumped into my mind,

“Focus on the greatness of Jesus.”

I know not every thought that goes through my head is a God-inspired thought, but I’ve been a believer in Jesus long enough to recognize this one was from God. The Holy Spirit always wants to glorify Jesus and reveal Him to us.

Excitement rose up in me as that thought came with clarity, peace, and joy…and obviously it is a Jesus-glorifying thought. I have been studying and teaching the Bible for decades, so I have continually dug into the greatness of Jesus. But this has been different.

Though Jesus is so good, so giving, and so concerned with giving us the best lives possible: abundant, eternal life according to God’s purposes; studying His greatness always releases insights and impartations of His blessing in other areas of life. This time I have been going deeper into who He is. Taking even more time.

I’ve only been doing this for a few weeks, but I know I’ll be on this path for quite some time…and it is already producing more of His amazing life in me.

I’m already experiencing more clarity, joy, and peace even in a world that seems to be losing it’s way quickly.

I felt drawn to start with Colossians 1–3 which are filled with life-changing insights on the greatness of Jesus, the greatness of our new life found in Him, and some powerful ideas on how to experience true transformation through Him.

In a fresh way, I’ve seen how Jesus is more incredible than I realized, and that who He is, what He does, and how He does things will produce levels of life in us and through us that cannot be experienced anywhere else.

For the next few months I’ll be writing and sharing insights I’ve gained so far on those three related topics. I’m praying God will give me the ability to bring another degree of encouragement, enlightenment, and experience through the words I share.

Jesus is Everything

Years ago my youngest son, David, invited another little boy to church. This young man had never been to church before so at the end of the service my wife asked him what he thought about it.

He said, “It was interesting, but why do you talk about Jesus so much? Everything was about Jesus. Why don’t you talk about other things?”

Obviously, we didn’t just stand around saying, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus” the whole time. There were several lessons we covered in the sermon and service that day, but it is absolutely true that we talked about Jesus over and over again.

Why? Why focus on Jesus over and over again?

From a Christian viewpoint, the entire purpose of life and the way life is designed by God to function is centered on Jesus. We will look at this more in future articles and videos, but as a starting point, Colossians 1:16d-17 tells us,

“All things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Acts 4:12 teaches, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

1 Corinthians 3:11 reveals, “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Jesus Himself proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by Me.” (John 14:6)

In just these few verses we see that Jesus is:

“Before all things”, in other words, He has always been; He is eternal.

All things have been created “through Him”. Jesus is the Co-creator of all things in every dimension.

All things are “held together by Him”. The entire universe has not only been created by Jesus, through Jesus, but He is the One who keeps it going and running.

All things have even been created” FOR HIM”. Revelation 4:11 tells us because of God’s will, God’s decision, His initiative All Things were created and this verse tells us the first reason everything was created was for Jesus. (We’ll get more into this in later articles.)

So…

In just one power packed sentence we see Jesus is before all things, the Co-Creator of all things, the holder together of all things, and the reason for all things.

We see that Jesus is not only a teacher of truth or the guide to real life: He is the truth, the way, and the life. All of those things are found in Him.

He is the only way to know the true God and the only way to salvation, receiving forgiveness for every sin we have or ever will commit, as a gift of God’s grace, resulting in eternal life. That is only possible through jesus.

He is the only true foundation we can build our lives on. Everything else will ultimately be shaken and destroyed. (2 Peter 3) only what is built on Jesus, from Jesus and for Jesus will stand in eternity.

There are so many opinions on what God is like, how we should live, and why we live, but according to Jesus Himself, the Old Testament prophets, and the New Testament apostles, Jesus is the source, the life-blood, the savior, and the ultimate purpose of all things.

And so much more!

If you are a Jesus follower, you have experienced a measure of His greatness, a measure of His love and life. But there is always more in Him.

I’m experiencing a more of His life as I dig deeper into His greatness. I invite you to join me as we focus on the Jesus: The Way, the Truth, the Life and everything else that is good.
