A Short but Powerful Answer to the “Why Do I Exist” Question

God Is Amazing and So Are You

You are incredible!

Even if you’re having a day where you don’t feel very special or you even feel like a failure, you really are incredible.

Just a few facts about you: (I encourage you to take a moment and let these facts sink in.)

Your brain consists of approximately 100 billion neurons (which is as many cells as there are stars in the Milky Way).

Each neuron has somewhere between 1,000 and 10,000 synapses, equaling about 1 quadrillion synapses. If all the neurons in the human brain were lined up, they would stretch 600 miles. That’s the approximate distance traveling from Washington D.C. to Nashville, Tennessee.

As a comparison, an octopus has 300,000 neurons, a honeybee has 950,000, and a jellyfish has no brain at all.

That is you. In that relatively small space between your ears are BILLIONS of connections and information highways that allow you to do what you do.

Your lungs contain over 300,000 million capillaries (tiny blood vessels). If they were laid end to end, they would stretch 1500 miles. That’s Washington D.C. to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Just in your lungs there are over 1500 MILES of blood vessels which allow you to breathe; day and night, as long as you live.

The focusing muscles of your eyes move around 100,000 times a day. To give your leg muscles the same workout, you would need to walk 80km (50 miles) every day.

Your human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as the Encyclopedia Britannica. Or any other encyclopedia for that matter. Scientists have yet to settle on a definitive amount, but the storage capacity of the brain in electronic terms is thought to be between 3 or even 1,000 terabytes. The National Archives of Britain, containing over 900 years of history, only takes up 70 terabytes, making your brain’s memory power pretty darn impressive.

These are but a handful of thousands of amazing facts about just the physical aspects of you.

There is So Much More to YOU

We know there is so much more to you than your physical and mental capabilities. You have a unique personality, unique talents, combinations of skills, abilities, and experiences that make you, literally, one of a kind.

There is no one on this planet of over 7 billion people who is just like you.

You really are special, whether you feel like it or not.

Over 7 billion of us, each one loaded with incredibly precise, complicated, systems and constant interactions keeping alive and doing amazing things.

When we look up at the night sky, see a mountain range, stand on the beach and look at the vastness of the ocean…when we see the incredible photographs from massive telescopes showing us the vastness and beauty of the universe, at some point, all of us ask.

What’s this all about? Why is the universe here? Why am I here?

There are really only two options to this question:

  1. The atheists answer: we are here by accident. Over billions of years chemicals and circumstances came together in just the right combinations to create us. We don’t know where the chemicals came from, but somehow they happened and the forces of the universe mixed us together in the right environment to create life and eventually us.

Some atheist scientists do speculate that we humans came to be as the result of an advanced designer somewhere in the universe, but that designer could not be God. Some alien race, designed it all.

God-denying scientists keep trying to come up with some theory that explains how a physical universe came into existence out of nothing; but all of their theories have huge holes in them.

2. The other option is that there is a God, who designed it all. He created us on purpose. This makes much more sense to me and it is clearly what the Bible teaches.

In Revelation 4:11 the elders and creatures around God’s throne, fall down in worship before Him saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.

There it is; there is the Bible’s answer as to why you and I are even here; why we exist.

We are here because God “willed it”. It is the will, the desire, the plan of God that you and I exist. That is why we are here.

God designed us, created us as these masterpieces of complex, organic, growing, developing image bearers of Himself.

God didn’t have to create me. He didn’t have to invest all that love and wisdom and power in creating me with my personality, abilities, and make up. He didn’t have to make plans for me based on His purposes. (2 Timothy 1:9). No one forced Him to do it.

But He did.

The smartest Being in existence decided you and I should be here. He wanted us here and He wanted us to carry unique expressions of who He is.

Genesis 1:26–28 tells us that God created us, male and female, in His image. Every single one of us, whether short or tall, male or female, black, white, yellow, or red are all created in the image of God.

God created a universe and placed a planet in this solar system that contains just the right environment to sustain life. He created atoms and protons and neutrons, He did all the complicated work of making our incredible brains and bodies to live and do important things in this world.

He decided when we would be born. He placed us in the right location, at the right time, to know Him and live the important purposes and plans He made for us before He ever created this planet.

You are here, I am here because the most brilliant Person in existence, motivated out of perfect love “willed it.”

At its most fundamental level, that is why we are here.

Consider how wonderfully complex and incredible your physical attributes are (there are so many more than what I touched on earlier). How much detail God invested in you. How special He made you. God thought enough of you to make you a one of a kind image bearer.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately and I’ve got to tell you; it gives me a greater sense of worth, value, humility, and gratefulness. It makes me bow down in worship to the One who put all this together, including me.

Especially when life is hard, unfair, or painful..

Realizing the One Creator of the seen and unseen worlds thought I was important enough to create encourages me. God Almighty “willed” my existence because my life matters to Him, as my Heavenly Father, and for those He has prepared me to help.

He even has the amazing power to take the toughest hardships and turn them to good in our lives (Romans 8:28).

You matter, God decided you should be here so He could love you, share His life with you, and to give you important work to do.

Please receive His love, receive His purposes.

You are here because God willed it.
